ABOUT MESA
Our Founding Story

Math, Engineering, and Science Academy (MESA) Charter High School is a community high school in Bushwick, Brooklyn. MESA was founded in August 2013 by co-founders and co-executive directors Arthur Samuels and Pagee Cheung to offer an alternative, non-selective, public high school option to the families of the Bushwick area of Brooklyn.

Our First Graduating Class

We graduated our first class of seniors in June 2017 and have graduated over 800 students to date. Our students come from more than forty different middle schools, including traditional public, parochial, and charter schools. Some are advanced students coming from magnet schools; others are beginning English Language Learners. What they all have in common is a desire to succeed. MESA students come to school every day, ready to work—we have a 93% attendance rate and a 93% punctuality rate, both significantly higher than other high schools in our district! When it comes to NYS Regents pass rates, MESA outperforms its peers by a rate of 20-30% and our cumulative graduation rate is 94%.

Eric Chen

Social Studies

Founding Social Studies Teacher

Eric is a first generation teacher who grew up attending schools in District 21 before pursuing his credentials at the University at Buffalo, State University of New York. While completing his Master's program, Mr. Chen taught 8th Grade Humanities, 11th Grade U.S. History and 11th-12th Grade Psychology, prior to teaching Global History I at MESA South Brooklyn. With a deep passion for all things history, Mr. Chen's goal is to create community-driven, goal-oriented, and curious leaders who challenge the annals of history. At MESA South Brooklyn, he hopes to foster an inclusive classroom where students critically engage with the past to shape a more equitable future. Committed to mentorship and culturally responsive teaching, he empowers young historians to decode primary sources, amplify marginalized narratives, and draw connections between historical patterns and modern social issues. Outside of teaching, Mr. Chen is a huge fan of anime! Our world's history is essentially one big story being told with opportunities to shed light on the unknown. With the proper storytelling and themes, watching anime can be an entirely new medium to do the same! His favorite anime, One Piece, is a multi-decade long story that is still being told to this day that contains many similar themes that we would see in our own history. Mr. Chen hopes to be able to create an equitable and progressive learning space that invites all students to become driving forces for change within their communities and the world.
